Kernels and Buds….to pop or not!
As I was looking at my lovely pure white geraniums today picking off the brown withering petals from the middle, not having the heart to toss the whole cluster quite yet, I once again noticed underneath perfectly formed buds forever waiting to see their day as fully formed petals. I thought, they look “just like” unpopped kernels in the bottom of my freshly microwaved bag. Why is it that I can never “time the popping” just right so that every kernel opens without a single one burning and stinking up my microwave for a week? Why also does the geranium always seem to start going bad when there are un-popped buds underneath each clump??
Indeed this seems to be so for us as humans as well. No matter how nicely we think we’ve “popped” or “bloomed” don’t we always have a few more kernels or buds hidden & tucked somewhere secret left to see the promising light. Little “what ifs” waiting to manifest their dreams. Does anyone know or care that we have un-popped kernels in our bag of live-time gifts? Do we know they are there?? Will we have the courage to figure out a way to bring them to fruition before our “dead headed composting time” is up?
As I approach 50, I can’t help but shout….Wait!!….. Don’t take me yet!! I still have kernels to pop, and buds to bloom!! There’s still time……I just need a little more heat and some more strong light!! Don’t these long awaited Northwest hot summer days make you want to pop those last kernels and bloom those late buds? They do for me! I say go for it. Let’s loose those old dead petals and reveal the fresh new buds underneath. Isn’t that what summer’s all about?? You never know when the by-pass pruners are right above your head! Carpe Sunshine!!
